about

Manchester-based composer Lili Holland-Fricke’s single ‘Draw on the Walls’ was originally written for a competition where composers were invited to make a piece of music inspired by Scrawl artist Nyokabi Kariuki’s concept of a 'peace place', using a motif from Nyokabi's original track 'equator song'.

Lili composed her piece ‘Draw on the Walls’ as an expression of the safety she feels while making visual art and being surrounded by colours, using processed sounds of pencils together with cello, voice, electronics, and guitar.

‘[Lili’s music] held us within its stilling, delicate realm, inviting us into a world full of light and fluttering colour. [It] trusts in its own softness and balance and as we listen, we find ourselves fully immersed, and fully moved by its sway.’ - Nyokabi Kariũki

The accompanying music video features Lili’s own drawings, animated by Prehuman.
